Finding the motivation to move more, without punishing yourself

Ask most adults what exercise means to them and you will hear words like slog, chore and guilt. Somewhere along the line movement became a bill to pay, something you do to make up for a bad week. Of course motivation runs out. Nobody keeps happily paying a bill they resent.

Yet almost everyone has a memory of moving for the fun of it. Racing a friend, dancing at a wedding, a game of tennis that went on too long. That version of you did not need motivating. I find it is much easier to reconnect with that than to build discipline from nothing.

Play, not punishment

When movement is about making amends, your mind files it next to dentist appointments and tax returns. When it is about feeling good, energetic or strong, it moves into a different drawer. Same activity, different label, very different motivation.

It also helps to drop the idea that only hard exercise counts. A walk at lunch, carrying the shopping, a few minutes of stretching in the kitchen. These are all movement, and they are much easier to repeat.

Notice the language you use, too. ‘I have to go to the gym’ feels very different from ‘I get to go for a swim’. A small change in wording can shift how the whole thing feels, and it costs nothing to try.

Momentum does the heavy lifting

A ball on the ground stays where it is until something moves it. Activity is similar. The first step is the hardest, and after that each outing makes the next one a little easier. You do not need to feel motivated to start. Often the motivation turns up a few minutes in.

Hypnosis can help here by letting your unconscious mind rehearse the movement first. When you have already pictured yourself enjoying a walk or a workout, the real thing feels more familiar and easier to begin.

Choosing a set time helps as well. When a walk always happens after breakfast, or a class is always on a Thursday, you stop having to decide each time. The decision has already been made, and that makes it much easier to follow through.

Something to try today

Think back to a time when you moved because you wanted to. It could be from last year or from long ago. Notice where you were, who was there and how your body felt.

Then ask yourself what a small, grown-up version of that might look like now. If you loved dancing, put a song on while you cook. If you loved football, go for a kick-about in the park. Do one tiny version this week and pay attention to how it feels, not how long it lasted.

If nothing comes to mind, that is fine too. Try something new and gentle, and treat it as an experiment rather than a test.

Episodes to listen to

These sessions focus on the feeling of movement rather than the effort. Listen at a quiet time, then notice how you feel the next time you have a chance to move.

Hypnosis to Manifest a Slim Healthy Vibrant Future

Free on The Hypnotist Podcast

This session asks you to remember a time you enjoyed a physical game, with tennis as the example, and to feel that energy again. A rolling ball shows how activity builds once a decision gets it moving. Food slips are treated as lessons rather than failures, so one off day does not end the effort.

Good if you used to love a sport and lost the habit.

The Bullseye: Hypnosis to Hit Your Target Weight

28 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

You picture yourself cycling along a mountain road while your body rests, and archery targets appear along the way. Each one stands for a single good choice, so every healthy decision counts as a hit in its own right. Your goal is framed as a place to come home to rather than a finish line.

Good if you like having something clear to aim at.

Hypnosis to Get Lean and Strong

30 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

This one reconnects you with past times of determination and tenacity, then links those feelings to strength exercises such as squats and pull-ups. The idea behind it is that resistance is where strength comes from, and obstacles are what make an achievement feel satisfying.

Good if you want to feel stronger, not only smaller.

Common questions

How do I get motivated to exercise when I hate it?

Start with movement you can tolerate or even enjoy, rather than what you think you should do. Keep it small enough that starting feels easy, and let momentum build. Many people find motivation grows after they begin, rather than before.

Can hypnosis help with exercise motivation?

Hypnosis can help you change how you feel about movement by rehearsing it in a relaxed state and linking it to good memories. It cannot do the exercise for you. The aim is to make starting feel more natural and less of a battle.

What if I have not exercised for years?

Start smaller than you think you need to, with something gentle such as a short walk. Getting into a rhythm matters more than how hard you work at first. If you have a health condition, check with your GP before you begin.

Hypnosis works with habits, feelings and attention. It is not medical treatment and does not replace your GP. If you have a health condition or an injury, or have not been active for a long time, check with your GP before starting a new exercise routine.
