Feeling confident in your body while you change

A lot of people put their confidence on hold. They will wear the dress, book the holiday or go to the reunion once they have lost the weight. Until then, life is a waiting room. The trouble is that waiting tends to feel miserable, and feeling miserable is a poor base for making good choices.

I see it the other way round. Confidence is not only a reward at the end. It is something you can practise now, and it often makes change easier, because it is natural to take care of something you feel good about.

Confidence first, not last

Think about how you treat something you value. You look after it. You do not neglect it until it is perfect. Your body works the same way. If you only like it once it has changed, there is very little reason to look after it in the meantime.

Most adults also have a memory of feeling at ease in their own skin, perhaps at a party, on a beach or with old friends. That version of you has not gone anywhere. In hypnosis I often help people reconnect with that feeling so it can come along with them, rather than waiting at the finish line.

This does not mean pretending to love everything about yourself. It means treating your body with respect while you change it, the way a good coach treats an athlete who is still in training.

Judgement, from others and from you

Fear of being judged keeps many people away from the gym, the pool or the dance floor. It helps to notice that we tend to judge others in the same way we fear being judged. If you look at someone and assume they will never change, it is worth asking whether you apply the same rule to yourself.

Swapping those thoughts for kinder ones, about others and about you, takes away some of the sting. In my experience, most people at the gym are far too busy with their own workout to be watching yours.

Be just as careful with the judge inside your own head. If you would not say it to a friend, it probably does not deserve airtime when you look in the mirror.

Something to try this week

Choose one thing you have been putting off until you look different. It might be a swim, a photo with friends or a favourite top at the back of the wardrobe. Do a small version of it this week.

Afterwards, write down one sentence about how it actually went, compared with how you feared it would go. The gap between the two is often bigger than you expect, and that gap is where confidence starts to grow.

Next time, try something a little bigger.

Episodes to listen to

Each of these sessions puts confidence near the start of the process rather than the end. Pick the one that matches what holds you back most.

Slimming Hypnosis: Reconnecting with A Confident Identity

29 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

At an imagined beach party, you watch a younger, confident version of yourself and then step into that feeling. The session treats food as something that looks after you rather than a diet, and offers new ways to handle boredom, stress and worry. Its core idea is that confidence comes first and change follows.

Good if you remember feeling confident and want that back.

The Freedom to be Lean Strong and Desirable

28 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

This session uses a walk on Dartmoor and the patterns in moving water to deepen relaxation. It contrasts feeding the confident version of you with feeding the doubtful one, and treats confidence as something that grows with each good decision. It also encourages trusting your own hunger signals over anxious tracking.

Good if you notice low self-worth showing up in how you eat.

Weight Loss Hypnosis to Fit Into Those Smaller Size Jeans

31 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

After a floating visualisation in a London park, you look again at judgements you have made about other people’s bodies and replace them with encouragement. That kinder lens then turns back on you. Embarrassment becomes determination, and consistency matters more than getting every day right.

Good if you avoid the gym for fear of being judged.

Hypnosis to Choose a Slim Confident Future with High Self Esteem

32 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

You picture a photo of your healthiest, most confident self in a national park, then climb a demanding mountain as a picture of lasting change. The session compares two possible futures and treats uncomfortable feelings about food as a guide rather than a punishment, ending with a choice between snacks and real connection.

Good if you want your feelings to point you somewhere useful.

Common questions

How can I feel confident in my body before losing weight?

Start by doing one thing you have been putting off, in a small way, and notice how it goes. Reconnect with times you felt good in yourself, and speak to yourself as you would to a friend. Confidence tends to build through action rather than waiting.

Can hypnosis help with body image?

Hypnosis can help you work with the feelings and habits of attention that shape how you see yourself. Many people find it helps them feel calmer and kinder towards their body. It is not a treatment for body image disorders, which need support from your GP.

Why do I feel worse about my body when I compare myself to others?

Comparison usually pits your everyday self against someone else’s best moment, often a filtered photo. That is not a fair contest. Comparing yourself with how you felt a while ago tends to be far more useful and much kinder.
