Holidays and weekends off without undoing your progress

There is a particular kind of dread that sets in before a holiday. You have been doing well, and now there are buffets, drinks and no routine ahead. Some people try to be perfect and spend the trip feeling deprived. Others decide it is all off until they get home. Neither feels very good.

I prefer a third option: treat time away as part of normal life, because it is. Weekends alone make up a big part of the year. If your habits only work on a quiet Tuesday, they are not really your habits yet.

Balance beats perfection

All-or-nothing thinking is the real risk on holiday, more than any single meal. One ice cream becomes ‘I have blown it’, and ‘I have blown it’ becomes a whole trip of eating without thinking.

A more useful aim is mostly good choices, with treats that you actually enjoy and do not apologise for. Fresh local food is often one of the best parts of being somewhere new. Walking more comes easily when you are exploring. The things worth letting go are the ones you were not tasting anyway, such as the airport snacks and the drink you did not really want.

It can help to decide in advance what matters most to you on this trip. For one person it is the local pastries, for another it is wine with dinner. Enjoy those properly and let the rest go, and you are much less likely to feel deprived.

Downtime as practice

I like to think of a holiday as a step along the way rather than a gap. Away from routine, every choice is a small decision rather than an autopilot habit. That makes it good practice for discernment, the skill of weighing what something will give you against what it costs.

Habits also have momentum. Once they are moving, they take less effort to keep going, and one lapse does not stop them. If you come home having kept a few of your usual habits ticking over, you have done well.

Coming home matters too. The first day back is where many people decide whether the holiday was a pause or the end. Make your first meal at home a normal one and the routine tends to pick itself back up.

Something to try on your next day off

Pick one moment each day, perhaps the first drink of the evening or the dessert menu, and ask yourself two questions. Will I enjoy this now? Will I still be glad I had it in a few hours?

If both answers are yes, have it and enjoy it fully. If the second answer is no, let it pass without any drama. Either way you are making a choice rather than drifting, and that is the habit worth bringing home.

  • Pick one decision point each day
  • Ask if you will enjoy it now
  • Ask if you will be glad later
  • Enjoy it fully or let it pass

Episodes to listen to

These sessions were made for time away from routine. The first two share a beach setting, so choose by whether you are already away or still getting ready to go.

Hypnosis to Continue to Lose Weight While on Holiday

25 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

Set on a beach at sunset, this session hands you a drink with a difference: one that carries pride, discernment and balance. It treats occasional treats as normal, makes fresh local food more appealing than processed snacks, and keeps your attention on the quality of each choice rather than on the scales.

Good if you are already away and worried about slipping.

Hypnosis to Lose Weight for Your Next Holiday

Recorded with a similar beach scene, this one leans towards the run-up and the return. It frames mostly healthy eating as a target you can actually hit, encourages walking and moving more while away, and lets you picture getting home feeling proud of how you handled it.

Good if you want your mindset sorted before you travel.

Hypnosis for Weight Loss While on Vacation

26 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

This session uses a playground roundabout to show how habits work: hard to push at first, then easy to keep turning. A single lapse slows it a little but does not stop it. It also encourages curiosity about fresh foods in a new place and makes processed sweets less tempting.

Good if you fear a trip away will undo your hard work.

Weight Loss Hypnosis to Stay on Track During Downtime

Free on The Hypnotist Podcast

From a poolside lounger, you look at small food and drink choices as trade-offs: what will this give me, and what will it cost? Imperfect choices are treated as win or learn, never as a reason for shame. Weekends and holidays become practice rather than a threat.

Good if you find weekends, not holidays, are where things come apart.

Common questions

How can I eat well on holiday without feeling deprived?

Aim for mostly good choices rather than a perfect record, and pick the treats you will really enjoy. Fresh local food and extra walking often come naturally when you are exploring. Many people find that dropping the all-or-nothing rule makes the whole trip feel easier.

Why do I always overeat at weekends?

Weekends break the structure that holds weekday habits in place, and many of us treat them as a reward for a hard week. Food and drink become the main way to switch off. It can help to plan one or two other ways to relax so food is not doing all the work.

Is it okay to have treats on holiday?

Yes. Treats are part of enjoying time away, and trying to avoid them completely often backfires. The aim is to choose the ones you really want and enjoy them without guilt, rather than eating everything on offer because it is there.
