Habit and mindset support alongside medical care
If you’re having medical weight-loss treatment, your prescriber is in charge of that treatment. What I help with is the part that sits around it: the habits, feelings and routines that shape how you eat from day to day.
Those habits matter while treatment is under way, and they matter after it ends. Medical care and habit work do different jobs. I don’t advise on medication, and nothing I do replaces it.
Your treatment comes first
Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for your treatment or your prescriber’s advice, and I will never suggest starting, stopping or changing any medication. Those decisions belong to you and your prescriber. If you feel unwell, are struggling to eat enough, or have any concerns about your treatment, contact your prescriber or GP straight away.
What I can help with
- Building eating habits you can keep for the long term, at a pace that suits you
- Emotional eating: noticing when you eat to cope with stress, boredom or tiredness, and finding other ways to meet those needs
- Recognising real hunger and fullness, and eating with more attention
- Evening routines, snacking and the situations that tend to trip you up
- Thinking ahead to life after treatment ends, so the habits you want already feel familiar
How I work with it
In a consultation we talk about your eating as it is now, what it was like before, and what you would like to be different. I’ll ask about any medical care you’re having, and I’ll work around whatever your prescriber has advised.
In sessions we focus on one or two habits at a time. In hypnosis I help you rehearse the routines you want, and practise responding differently to the feelings that used to send you to food. You keep a recording of the hypnosis to listen to between sessions. Sensible eating, activity and your own commitment still do much of the work. Hypnotherapy may help those changes feel more natural.
Preparing for life after treatment
Many people worry about what comes next when a course of medical treatment ends. That’s a fair concern, and it’s one to talk through with your prescriber, who can advise on your plan.
Alongside that, it can help to have habits in place that you have already practised: regular meals, ways to unwind that don’t involve food, and a calmer response to cravings. I can’t promise what your weight will do, and no one honestly can. What we can do is work on the habits that are in your hands.
Common questions
Can hypnotherapy replace medical treatment for weight?
No. Hypnotherapy works on habits, attention and how you feel about food. It is not a medical treatment and it is not an alternative to one. Any decision about your treatment is for you and your prescriber.
Can I have hypnotherapy while I’m on prescribed medication?
Yes, as long as your prescriber is happy. Hypnotherapy doesn’t involve taking anything. Let your prescriber know you’re doing it, tell me about any health conditions in the consultation, and keep following your prescriber’s advice.
When is a good time to start?
Whenever you feel ready. Some people like to work on their habits while their treatment is under way, and others get in touch after it has finished. Either way, we start with the habits that matter most to you.
My treatment has finished and old habits are coming back. Can you help?
Yes. This is a common time for people to get in touch, and we work on the habits and triggers that are returning, one at a time. If you have any concerns about your health, speak to your prescriber or GP as well.
