Sleep hypnosis for weight loss: what it can and can’t do

Let’s be clear from the start: listening to hypnosis as you fall asleep will not change your weight while you sleep. What a bedtime recording may do is help you wind down, ease evening stress and sleep better, and that may make calmer evening habits easier to keep.

I’m asked about sleep hypnosis for weight loss a lot, usually by someone who has seen videos promising to melt fat overnight. After 17 years in clinical practice, I’d rather tell you what’s realistic than sell you a fantasy.

Does sleep hypnosis make you lose weight?

No, not on its own. Your weight changes with what you eat and how active you are over time, and no recording can do that for you while you sleep. Hypnosis is a way of practising calmer responses and new habits. Sensible eating, moving more and your own effort still do the work.

Where sleep hypnosis can help is with the things that tend to unravel at night: stress, tiredness, and the habit of grazing in front of the television or opening the fridge before bed.

What a bedtime recording can help with

  • Winding down. A recording gives your mind something calm to follow instead of replaying the day.
  • Evening stress. A lot of night-time eating is about settling tension rather than hunger. Relaxing on purpose gives you another way to switch off.
  • Calmer evening habits. Hypnosis can be used to rehearse a different evening: closing the kitchen after dinner, or noticing an urge to snack and letting it pass.
  • Better sleep. Hypnosis is widely used to help people relax and sleep, and a regular wind-down routine helps too.

Why sleep and eating are linked

Research does link short sleep with appetite and food choices. A review of 11 small studies (Al Khatib and others, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2017) found that when people’s sleep was cut short, they ate more the next day without burning more energy.

That’s a link, not a promise. The studies were short and mostly done in sleep labs, and nobody can tell you that sleeping better will change your weight. But most of us know the feeling: after a bad night, cravings are louder and willpower is thinner. Looking after your sleep is a sensible part of looking after your eating.

How to use a sleep hypnosis recording

  1. Get into bed firstListen when you’re ready to sleep, lying down with the lights low. Set your alarm and put your phone on do not disturb before you press play.
  2. Headphones are optionalUse them if you share a room or it’s noisy. Otherwise a speaker at low volume is fine.
  3. Let yourself fall asleepIt’s fine to drift off before the end. A sleep recording is made for that, so there’s no need to stay awake or try hard.
  4. Make it a habitListen most nights rather than once in a while. Repetition is how a routine starts to feel automatic.
  5. Never while drivingNever listen to hypnosis while driving, operating machinery or doing anything that needs your attention.

A simple evening routine

A recording works best as part of an evening that’s set up to help you rather than fight you. Try a few of these:

  • Eat a proper evening meal at a regular time, enough that you won’t go to bed hungry, and decide beforehand whether you’d like anything after it.
  • Close the kitchen when you’ve finished: wipe the side, switch off the light, and make a hot drink if you want something comforting.
  • Cut back on caffeine in the afternoon and evening.
  • Dim the lights and put screens away half an hour before bed.
  • If an urge to snack turns up, pause and ask what you need: food, rest, comfort or just a break. There’s more on this on my eating at night page.
  • Go to bed and get up at roughly the same time each day, weekends included.
  • Press play on your recording once you’re in bed.

The recordings I’d suggest

These two sessions from my store pair well. Restful Deep Sleep Hypnosis is for bedtime, to help you wind down and settle into sleep. Hypnosis to Snack Less and Exercise More is one for earlier in the day, for snacking when your mind is busy and for getting moving. Play it sitting somewhere comfortable, never while driving.

When to see your GP about sleep

A recording is for everyday sleep trouble. Please see your GP if:

  • you’ve slept badly most nights for three months or more, or changing your habits hasn’t helped
  • you snore loudly and someone has noticed your breathing stop and start, or you gasp or choke in your sleep
  • you feel very sleepy during the day, or poor sleep is making it hard to cope

If sleep itself is the main problem, my sleep site has more: Deep Sleep Hypnosis, including what to do when you can’t sleep.

Common questions

Does sleep hypnosis help you lose weight?

Not on its own. No recording can change your weight while you sleep. What a bedtime recording may do is help you wind down, ease evening stress and sleep better, which can make calmer evening eating easier. Sensible eating, moving more and your own effort still do the work.

Can I listen to weight-loss hypnosis while I sleep?

You can listen in bed, and it’s fine to drift off. But there’s no good evidence that suggestions heard while you’re fully asleep change your habits. The useful part is the calm time while you settle, and the routine itself.

Is it OK to fall asleep during sleep hypnosis?

Yes. A sleep recording is made for that. If you fall asleep before the end, you’ll simply sleep on and wake up as normal.

What is the best sleep hypnosis for weight loss?

The one you’ll actually listen to most nights. Choose a recording by a qualified hypnotherapist that’s honest about what it can do, and be wary of anything promising weight loss overnight.

Can poor sleep make you eat more?

It may. Research links short sleep with eating more the next day, but the studies were short and mostly done in sleep labs, so treat it as a link rather than a promise. Looking after your sleep is a sensible part of looking after your eating.

When should I see a GP about my sleep?

See your GP if you’ve slept badly most nights for three months or more, if you snore loudly and your breathing stops and starts in your sleep, or if you feel very sleepy during the day.
