Feeling worthy of looking after yourself

Some people know exactly what would help them eat better, and still do not do it. When we look closely, the block is often not knowledge or willpower. It is a quiet sense of not being worth the effort.

That feeling rarely announces itself. It shows up as always putting yourself last, eating whatever is left, saying ‘yeah, but’ to every good idea. Below I look at deserving as a hidden block, and at what changes when you start treating your body like somewhere worth caring for.

In my sessions this comes up far more often than people expect. Someone arrives wanting help with snacking, and underneath it sits a lifetime of putting themselves at the bottom of the list.

How not deserving shows up

Low self-worth around food is often subtle. You cook properly for everyone else and graze on scraps yourself. You buy the good food and then save it for a special occasion that never comes. You make a start, it goes well, and something in you finds a reason to stop.

That last one is worth noticing. If part of you does not feel it deserves to look and feel better, it will tend to pull you back to what feels familiar. It is not laziness. It is a belief doing its job. These beliefs often go back a long way. You may have grown up as the one who looked after everyone else, or picked up the idea that wanting things for yourself was selfish. None of that makes it true. It just makes it familiar. Common signs include:

  • Eating standing up or on the go
  • Feeding everyone else first
  • Saying ‘yeah, but’ to change
  • Stopping just as things go well

Your body as a home

An image I come back to often is the body as a house. Picture a run-down house in a street of well-kept homes. It does not get repaired because it is already beautiful. It gets repaired because someone decides it is worth it, and then it slowly starts to look loved.

The same is true for us. Care comes first. Better food, rest and movement become ways of looking after something that matters, not punishments for how you look. Worth is not something you earn by changing. It is the starting point.

This is also why harsh plans can backfire for people with low self-worth. If the plan is built on punishment, it confirms the belief that you are a problem to be fixed. A plan built on care says something very different.

Something to try: one act of care

Today, do one small thing for yourself that you would normally only do for a guest. Lay the table properly for your own lunch. Use the nice plate. Sit down to eat rather than standing at the counter.

Notice any voice that says it is a waste, or silly, or not for you. You do not need to argue with it. Keep doing the small thing anyway. Over time, actions like this tell a deeper part of you that you are worth the effort. It may feel small, even pointless, but worth is built in exactly these moments, when you treat yourself as someone who matters with no one else watching.

Episodes to listen to

These sessions work on worthiness and self-care as the foundation for change. Two use a similar house image, so if one speaks to you, the other probably will too.

Deserving to Lose Weight: Weight Loss Hypnotherapy

37 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

You restore a neglected house in a street of loved homes, starting before it looks perfect, and revive a wilting flower with water and light. A mirror then shows a future reflection built on care rather than force. The idea is that your body already deserves looking after, and change follows from that.

Good if you feel you have to earn the right to treat yourself well.

Hypnosis to Lose Weight With Confidence and Worthiness

24 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

You recall a time you felt confident and at ease in yourself, such as at a party, and step back into that version of you. The session separates your worth from your weight and your relationship status, and asks you to find a reason to change that is about you, not about pleasing anyone else.

Good if you have tied your value to how you look.

After the image of an icicle melting in sunshine helps you relax, you move ahead to a wall of photographs showing a full, meaningful life. The session targets the ‘yeah, but’ thinking that stalls change, and puts steady progress ahead of perfection.

Good if you find a reason not to every time you try to start.

Hypnosis To Feel Worthy to Lose Weight and Enjoy the Journey

Free on The Hypnotist Podcast

On a beach in Thailand you see three doors. One leads to more of the same, one to strict rules and a tiring up and down cycle, and one to small, steady changes that still leave room for pleasure. You choose the third and bring the logical and pleasure-loving parts of your mind together.

Good if you go from treats to tight rules and back again.

Weight Loss Hypnosis: Loving Your Body to Lose Weight

27 min, free on The Hypnotist Podcast

This shorter session also uses a neglected house as a picture of the body, which changes once it gets care instead of criticism. A flower responds to water and sunlight in the same way. Motivation is built on gratitude for your body rather than on pressure.

Good if you have used self-criticism to drive every attempt to change so far.

Common questions

Can low self-esteem affect eating habits?

For many people it can. If you do not feel worth looking after, it is hard to keep up habits that are all about looking after yourself. Working on self-worth often makes the practical changes easier to stick with.

What is self-sabotage with food?

It is when part of you undoes progress just as things start going well. Often it comes from an old belief that you do not deserve to feel better. Recognising the pattern is the first step to changing it.

How do I start feeling that I deserve to look after myself?

Start with actions rather than waiting for the feeling. Small acts of care, repeated, tend to change how you see yourself over time. Hypnosis can help by working on the old beliefs that say you are not worth the effort.
