Hypnosis for overeating

Overeating means eating more than your body needs at the time: carrying on past full, eating so fast you barely taste it, or finishing a packet you meant to have a few of.

Most of us overeat now and then, at a celebration or a big Sunday lunch. It becomes a problem when it happens most days, when it leaves you uncomfortable, or when it’s the main thing standing between you and the way you want to feel.

Overeating or binge eating?

Binge eating disorder is a recognised mental health condition. Signs include regularly eating very large amounts in a short time, feeling unable to stop, eating in secret, and feeling ashamed or disgusted afterwards. If that sounds like you, please speak to your GP or contact Beat, the UK eating disorder charity, on 0808 801 0677. It responds well to the right treatment, and hypnotherapy is not a substitute for it.

Common reasons people overeat

  • Eating fast, so fullness doesn’t register until it’s too late
  • Eating while distracted by a screen or work
  • Skipping meals and arriving at the next one very hungry
  • Using food to deal with stress or difficult feelings
  • Habits from childhood, such as always clearing the plate

Things you can try today

  • Slow down: put your knife and fork down between mouthfuls
  • Serve your food on a plate rather than eating from the packet
  • Pause halfway through a meal and check how full you feel
  • Eat regular meals so you never arrive at the table starving
  • Notice what was happening before an overeating episode

How I work with it

We look at when and why the overeating happens. In hypnosis I help you slow down, tune in to the feeling of having had enough, and respond differently to the triggers that send you past it. If emotions are driving it, we work on those too.

Common questions

How do I know if I have binge eating disorder?

Only a health professional can tell you that. If you regularly eat very large amounts and feel out of control while you do, talk to your GP. They can refer you for the right support.

Can hypnotherapy help alongside treatment?

Sometimes, yes, but only with the agreement of the professionals treating you. I’ll ask about that before we start.

Will I have to diet?

No. The focus is on how you eat, not a strict list of rules. Eating regular, satisfying meals is usually part of the answer.
